IS MOHINIYATTAM A MIXTURE OF BHARATNATYAM AND KATHAKALI / KOODIYATTAM ? A NEW SUBJECT FOR DISCUSSION, PLEASE PLACE YOUR CARDS...

Deepa Chakravarthy , A mohiniyattam Practitioner from Chennai Said:
Mohiniattam follows hand gestures of Kathakali, and its movements are more curved in
circles and not anywhere close to being linear... If at all it has any mixture of Bharatanatayam, then it I would say it has certainly borrowed only the repertoire structure and choreographic structure of items and little more from Abhinaya Darpanam to widen its vocabulary..... I am not a theoretical person, only a practitioner

Supriya Rajan, A Mohiniyattam Practitioner from Malaysia Wrote on my Facebook Wall: Divya, when u say that attam is mainly horizontal swaying movement (mainly the upper torso and perhaps the main limbs) and categorise nritya as a multi directional movement, its throwing a whole new light on mohiniyattam and the other danceforms of kerala. if u talk of that aspect alone, then i feel we have borrowed a lot form nrittam, perhaps we have a lot to explore and incorporate. vertical movements are also there in mohiniyattam. dimension i guess is what each one of has to work on to give the dance form a lot ore dynamic feel. as a dance form from kerala i guess it has absorbed a lot for kathakai and koodiyattam. as is understood that mohiniyattam is inspired by the earlier from of baratanatyam yes i feel it has a lot from baratanatyam, the music, the stances and possibly the purpose of mohiniyattam.... !!!!!!

Renowned Mohiniyattam Exponent, Guru. Sunanda Nair, Texas, USA Said:
We are all working towards giving Mohini Attam its right ful place to stand on its own. We dont need to borrow anything from any style. Our texts are rich and we rather borrow from our own region. To make it simple........ we are all indians but we still have different states that have their own, eating, reading, clothing, music , dancing etc............. which are well defined in the geographical map. So to enrich your style you need to only look around you ................

My facebook friend Priya Lasya Said:
Priya Lasya the most complex of the questions when it comes to the dances is - what to take in. a straight away divergence is found in maybe the basic posture like say aramandi (in different styles) and then you have similarities too at some other level- say the swaying or the linearity - again with other dance forms. so really it is the question of who has the ability to add in! credibility? and how it augurs.

Hi readers, now its your turn, please post your comments....
