Every art-form in its making or evolution, rather, is greatly inspired by the surrounding world. Mohiniyattam is no exception; the swaying of paddy fields at the gentle breeze, splashing waves of Arabian Sea, Calm rivers, the swinging Coconut palms.. all are visible in the movements of Mohiniyattam.    Mukhachalam is a Sudha Nritta piece that depicts the captivating swaying movements of Mohiniyattam. Mukhachalam is presented as the first or second item in a Mohiniyattam Concert. Mukhachalam is full of circular and semi-circular movements which are the predominant characteristic of Mohiniyattam.    Mukhachalam A composition of Kavalam Narayana Panicker A Choreography of my Guru Smt Vinitha Nedungadi  (www.vinithanedungadi.com)   A Padam is manily an Abhinaya Piece. The Natya Paddhathi of Kerala seen in Koodiyattam, Kathakali and Mohiniyattam gives more importance to Abhinaya. The slow tempo of Mohiniyattam gives more space and scope for Abhinaya....

IS MOHINIYATTAM A MIXTURE OF BHARATNATYAM AND KATHAKALI / KOODIYATTAM ? A NEW SUBJECT FOR DISCUSSION, PLEASE PLACE YOUR CARDS... Deepa Chakravarthy , A mohiniyattam Practitioner from Chennai Said: Mohiniattam follows hand gestures of Kathakali, and its movements are more curved in  circles and not anywhere close to being linear... If at all it has any mixture of Bharatanatayam, then it I would say  it has certainly borrowed only the repertoire structure and choreographic structure of items and little more from Abhinaya Darpanam to widen its vocabulary..... I am not a theoretical person, only a practitioner  Supriya Rajan, A Mohiniyattam Practitioner from Malaysia Wrote on my Facebook Wall:  Divya, when u say that attam is mainly horizontal swaying movement (mainly the upper torso and perhaps the main limbs) and categorise nritya as a multi directional movement, its throwing a whole new light on mohiniyattam and the other dance forms of kerala. if u talk of that a...

Mohiniyaattam.... There is no precise historical evidence to establish the antiquity of Mohiniyaattam, the classical female dance-tradition of Kerala. Probably it was evolved in the eighteenth century. In the court of king Swathi Thirunal who ruled Travancore (South Kerala) in the 19th century Mohiniyaattam flourished along with Bharatanatyam, the classical dance of Tamil Nadu. The post -Swathy period witnessed the downfall of Mohiniyaattam. ‘The dance of the enchantress’ slipped into eroticism to satisfy the epicurean-life of some provincial satraps and feudal lords. Poet Vallathol rescued Mohiniyaattam form total extinction. It was added to the curriculum of Kalamandalam in 1930. The make-up and dressing of Mohiniyaattam is simple and semi-realistic. The dancer’s face is made up of yellow and pink-paste. She wears sandal-colored jacket and sari. Jasmin flowers adorn her tied-up hair. She decorates her eyes with KAJAL and the lips are reddened. The traditional theme of ...

I request all the writers and practitioners to correct. You may please keep a copy of these images for your future reference. Because many of the recent editions repeat the same mistake.  So, we have now come to the conclusion that translation of 'Vyavaharamala' is not the earliest known reference about Mohiniyattam. Its translation belongs to AD 1809 (19th Century). The works Goshayathra (by Kalakkath  Kunchan Nambiar  (1705–1770)  and Balarama Bharatham (By  Dharma Raja   Karthika Thirunal Rama Varma  (‘ധര്‍മ്മ രാജ‘ കാര്‍ത്തിക തിരുനാള്‍ രാ‍മവര്‍മ്മ, 1724–1798) that carry references about Mohiniyattam; belong to the 18th century. So I request all those who are interested in the art form of Mohiniyattam, its history, origin and evolution may consider these books for detailed research....  Divya Nedungadi Mohiniyattam Artiste
